Words from the Commander

A greeting for a happy new year and continued support of our long standing heritage as 49ers. Our reunion dates are set for Sept 13-16, 2018 in the Norfolk, VA area. The reunion planners are diligently working on a tour of either a Nimitz class aircraft carrier or a Trident nuclear submarine.

On Dec 9th, the 49th FSA had the joy of participating in a surprise 90th birthday party for our dear Erma Hester. She is doing well and much appreciates the card and flowers. (As an aside, your webmaster, Bob Elliott first met her at our reunion in Del City OK in 1997 and then as now she remains a true inspiration to us all). She has worked tirelessly to keep us informed and we hope she can prepare some more good words from “Erma’s Corner” for our next newsletter in March.

Our Historian, Paul Skoskie is recieving excellent care in Dallas, TX for a medical condition.Paul also is one of the early FSA members and we wish him a full and complete recovery. Paul, Fred Vollbach, Lee Briner, John Caruso and Henry Salustro were instrumental in the extension of the 49th FSA to include post WWII members. They helped insure that the FSA continues its long standing heritage.

Our colleague in France, Nico Courtine has advised that the town hall of Camaret sur Aigues will dedicate a plaque to honor Lt. Donald Tracy, P38 pilot 49th FS KIA there in August 1944. The ceremony is 8 May 2018. If anyone happens to plan a trip to France in early May, it would be super if some of us could attend.

Special request: Please submit stories for  our next newsletter.  There is bound to be many interesting stories you can share. They don’t need to be long, just some neat facts we know we would find interesting.

Finally, if you haven’t done so already, let us know if you plan to attend our reunion so we can get a baseline headcount.

Tony
